The End of a Star Wars Saga

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker has officially been released and has wrapped up the Skywalker saga in a controversial movie. The saga started back in 1977 with the release of Star Wars – A New Hope and it quickly became popular racking up 775.4 million dollars. Only three years later did Star Wars – The Empire Strikes Back come out to easily achieve 547.8 million dollars. This was just the beginning of the Star Wars series as Star Wars – Return of the Jedi would come in 1983 with a total amount of 475 million dollars. The trilogy became the hottest set of movies for the entirety of the 1980s and would continue until 1999 with the anticipated release of Star Wars – The Phantom Menace. This sparked off the prequels for Star Wars – Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith to follow. In 2016, a new trilogy would begin as it continues the Skywalker saga with new characters and new controversy.

Emily Clark, a junior at Immanuel Lutheran Christian Academy (ILCA), has been a Star Wars fan for many years.

“I’ve been a (Star Wars) fan a little before the Force Awakens came out. I haven’t seen Star Wars for most of my life and the first episode I watched was The Empire Strikes Back and I feel like it was a good first episode to watch,” Clark said.

The biggest Star Wars debate in the past few decades has always been prequels vs. originals. But to Clark, the winner is clear.

“I do prefer the original movies. Only because I feel it was really at its prime and kinda set up the entire story but however I do really like the prequels because my favorite character is Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Clark said.

Clark has her own opinion on the new trilogy as well.

“The newer ones are pretty good. I don’t like when they deviate from the original plotline. So I really the Force Awakens because it was almost a New Hope scene for scene,” Clark said.

Drexel King, a senior at ILCA, agrees with Clark on the original vs. new trilogy debate.

“The originals have also been the best I gotta go with that. I like all of them, I like the vibe I get from them, because it is like Sci-Fi and futuristic but also really old,” King said.

Out of all of the Star Wars movies King has one that really makes his skin crawl.

“I hate episode two; Attack of the Clones. It’s terrible, it looks bad, the story is awful, the acting is bad and it is just awful. Even Rogue One is bad,” King said.

With the release of the last Skywalker movie, fans are in a mixed review frenzy. Some fans might say that Rise of Skywalker did not live up to the hype set up before it. King is stuck in the middle.

“I wouldn’t say it is the end of Star Wars, but how they ended it was okay. It could have been worse and it could have been better. I wasn’t all that upset, I was fine with it,” King said.

Jackson Bush, a junior at ILCA, is in agreement with his other classmates on what the best trilogy is.

“As much as the movies were mistakes to be made and having to be edited now, they still make more sense than the movies we have now. There was a lot of passion coming from George Lucas that Disney lost when they bought it,” Bush said.

Despite the compelling argument from King, Bush says the worst Star Wars movie is one most fan can agree with.

The Phantom Menace is so bad. It is all over the place but the big battle at the end of the movie was good,” Bush said.

The Skywalker saga is finally complete with the Rise of Skywalker wrapping it up. Although the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television show is returning with the continuation of the Skywalkers, the official movie saga is complete. Fans are excited for the upcoming movies and what Disney has planned for the Star Wars future.
